@abrinton Hello Alan, Thanks for you reply. It is the Burgundy metal model. There is no sound when playing one of the keys, plus I’m sure it needs a tuning as well. I have had it for over 40 years and it has sat for quite a while…!

    • Many of us here tune and do some repairs on our own melodicas, Neill.

The reed for the key that’s not playing could have failed, or it could be stuck or need re-gapping. You should be able to tell by opening it up. The gap (distance between the reed plate and the tip of the reed) may need to be widened. This can be done easily by sliding something flat under the reed, about halfway down, from the tip end. Then gently raise the reed and hold it there briefly several times. Don’t overdo it.

The HM-26 and HM-27 Soprano and Alto Piano models are plentiful and can be had for reasonable prices on eBay. It would be cost prohibitive to have a professional repair your HM-27 in comparison with replacing it. If you look for one on eBay or elsewhere, check the photos carefully to get one that’s clean, withut scuffing and scratches, and ask the seller if it’s air tight.

The How to Tune a Melodica tuturial here on the bottom right explains very clearly how to do that. I have tuned many with good success.

You can check the tuning online or with a free tuning app. I use AP-Tuner. You’ll know then how far off the tuning is, and use the app or online tuner for tuning.
